In the arid hills of La Paz, Baja California, La Cañada emerges as a master plan that delicately blends with its rocky, desert surroundings. The site, characterized by its cactus-filled landscape and expansive views of the Sea of Cortez, invites a deep connection between the natural world and the architecture. The project’s layout makes the most of the natural topography, guiding a central path that connects residential lots positioned strategically to either embrace the sea or the surrounding hills.

This intentional distribution not only ensures magnificent vistas but also allows the homes to sit harmoniously with the landscape. The sinuous road that traverses the site fractures and extends, creating hidden spaces like outdoor fire pits and a subterranean observatory. These intimate pockets allow residents to experience the tranquility of the environment in secluded areas, adding a layer of privacy and introspection. The design maintains the organic forms of the land, with the architecture flowing seamlessly into the contours of the hill, ensuring that the built environment feels like an extension of the natural world.

The project’s careful integration of architecture with its desert surroundings garnered recognition, earning second place in the AAI Mexico National Award 2024, a prestigious award that celebrates thoughtful, context-driven architecture.

En las áridas colinas de La Paz, Baja California, La Cañada se presenta como un plan maestro que se fusiona delicadamente con su entorno rocoso y desértico. El sitio, caracterizado por su paisaje lleno de cactus y vistas expansivas hacia el Mar de Cortés, invita a una profunda conexión entre la naturaleza y la arquitectura. La distribución del proyecto aprovecha la topografía natural, guiando un camino central que conecta los lotes residenciales, los cuales están posicionados estratégicamente para aprovechar las vistas, ya sea hacia el mar o hacia los cerros circundantes.

Esta distribución intencional no solo garantiza vistas impresionantes, sino que también permite que las viviendas se integren armónicamente con el paisaje. El sinuoso camino que atraviesa el sitio se fractura y se extiende, creando espacios ocultos como fogatas al aire libre y un observatorio subterráneo. Estos rincones íntimos permiten que los residentes experimenten la tranquilidad del entorno en áreas apartadas, añadiendo una capa de privacidad y reflexión. El diseño mantiene las formas orgánicas del terreno, con la arquitectura fluyendo sin esfuerzo en las contorneadas colinas, asegurando que el entorno construido se sienta como una extensión del mundo natural.

La cuidadosa integración de la arquitectura con su entorno desértico le permitió al proyecto obtener el segundo lugar en el Premio Nacional AAI México 2024, un prestigioso galardón que celebra la arquitectura pensada y en sintonía con su contexto.
